Q. What is the warranty?

A. The warranty on all Kemlan slow combustion heaters is 10 years for the firebox. Refer to the operating manual for further details.

Q. What is a slow combustion heater?

A. A slow combustion heater is a heater which has an airtight firebox. The amount of air, which enters the firebox, is regulated by the operator via the use of an air intake slide. The advantage of a slow combustion heater over an open fireplace is that they are more economical on fuel and give a larger heat output.

Q. How hot does a heater get?

A. All heaters get hot enough to burn you. Ask your local authorised distributor for details for availability and pricing on safety screens.

Q. Will the heater heat my large room?

A. Yes. Refer to the comparison chart for the area that each model can heat.

Q. What colours are available for the heater?

A. All Kemlan heaters come in various colours refer to the technical specifications of the heater you choose.

Q. Can I cook on top?

A. Yes. Some models have radiant cook-tops. Refer to the technical specifications of the heater you choose.

Q. How much is wood?

A. Consult your local authorised distributor for the costs of wood in your area.

Q. Can I burn grass clippings?

A. No.

Q. How much does it cost (heater/flue and installation)?

A. A freestanding slow combustion heater has four parts included in the cost. These are a: floor protector. (required where a floor is heat sensitive) b: the heater. c: the flue system. d: the installation. Consult your local authorised distributor for the requirements and costs of each component mentioned above.

Q. Is the heater made in Australia?

A. Yes. All Kemlan heaters are produced by a wholly Australian owned and operated family business in Brisbane. Kemlan fireplaces have been established since 1969 and only produce wood heaters for the Australian market.

Q. Is it environmentally friendly?

A. Yes. All Kemlan heaters are tested to the strict air quality standard AS/NZS 4012/4013.

Q. Where can I buy a heater?

A. Refer to the authorised distributor list on this web-site.

Q. Is the heater safe to leave burning if I go out of the house for a time?

A. Yes. All slow combustion heaters have an airtight firebox therefore nothing can escape from the firebox when the door is closed.

Q. What is the heater made of?

A. Kemlan manufactures it's fireboxes from heavy duty 6mm mild steel.

Q. How long will a slow combustion heater burn?

A. Most slow combustion heaters are designed to burn for 6 to 8 hours, dependent on the type of fuel used. (type of hardwood.)

Q. Can I burn anything in a slow combustion heater?

A. No. All slow combustion heaters are tested with a particular fuel type. The majority of slow combustion heaters on the Australian market are tested with hardwood. It is important that you burn the type of fuel that the heater you purchase is tested with. Ask your local authorised distributor for the best fuel source in your area.

Q. What size logs will it take?

A. The size of the log is determined by the opening and internal size of the firebox. Don't be fooled by fireboxes with large external measurements and small internal measurements. A good test is to take a piece of wood and try it in various fireboxes on the showroom floor before you purchase a heater.

Q. How much fuel does it burn?

A. Ask your local distributor how many kilograms per hour a heater can burn. All heaters are tested to an Australian standard and this information is recorded and given to the manufacturer. Refer to the comparison chart on this web site for information on Kemlan heaters.

Q. Why has it got firebricks?

A. There is two reasons why a heater has firebricks. Firstly firebricks increase the thermal mass of the heater therefore longer, cleaner burn times. Secondly they protect the base of the firebox from corrosion. Kemlan only uses firebricks on the base of their heaters as this gives best results for thermal mass and protection from corrosion.

Q. How do you regulate the heat?

A. Each heater has an air inlet slide, which has a high - low setting. The high setting is used for maximum airflow into the firebox therefore maximum heat output. When the slide is set towards the low setting the air intake is reduced therefore a lower heat is achieved.

Q. What does the fan do?

A. The fan helps circulate heat throughout your home. A ceiling fan is also a good alternative to a fan fitted to the heater.

Q. Do I have to use the fan?

A. Kemlan heaters do not require the use of the fan if fitted to the heater except on inbuilt / insert models with a timber mantle. The advantage of a fan on a heater is that you can circulate the heat quickly in the first two hours of operation. Once the heat is circulating throughout your home the fan is no longer necessary and can be switched off.

Q. Do I require a fan on my heater?

A. All Kemlan heaters can be used without a fan with the exception of inbuilt / insert models with a timber mantle. Some Kemlan heaters have a fan option refer to the comparison chart for details

Q. How long will the firebox last?

A. Properly maintained we believe a Kemlan heater will last for 12 to 15 years.

Q. How often do I clean it out?

A. All Kemlan slow combustion heaters are ash-bed models rather, which means there is no ash-drawer. It is recommended to clean ash-bed models out only once or twice during the heating season. A deep ash-bed allows the fire to burn longer and cleaner.

Q. Is it easy to clean?

A. Yes. When the heater is cool use a non-flammable container and hand-scoop. Simply scoop the ash from the heater into the container and dispose of ash.

Q. Do I have to put in cement?

A. No. All Kemlan heaters have a fully welded heavy-duty steel construction. The advantage of a steel firebox over a cast-iron firebox is that no cement is used to join the seams as the seams are welded.

Q. Does the glass stay clean?

A. Yes, provided the type of fuel used is well seasoned and the heater is operated as per operating instructions.

Q. What can I clean the glass with?

A. First ensure the fireplace is not in operation and the ash is safe to touch. Dip a damped cloth in the white ash in the bottom of the heater. Wipe the ash onto the affected area of the glass ceramic until the creosote is removed. Wipe with a clean damp cloth to finish.

Q. What's the door rope for?

A. The door rope provides an airtight seal where the door meets the firebox. The rope should be replaced every 3 to 5 years.

Q. Can I get spare parts if I need them?

A. Yes. Contact your local authorised distributor for the availability and pricing details of the parts you require.

Q. What maintenance does a heater need?

A. Refer to the maintenance manual supplied with the heater as each heater has a different maintenance schedule.
